Introduction: Seeking a Defining Moment
Well, this is it! This is the moment thousands of sports gamers worldwide have been waiting for: the October unveiling of FIFA 2000. Months of hype, intrigue and anticipation will indeed be finally put to rest on October 26, 1999. After a “grueling?number of hours peeking at the newest incarnation of EA SPORTS?venerable footy series, it occurs to me that perhaps few, if any, sports games in recent memory inspire the raw emotion and global following of the FIFA franchise. Add to this semi-cult status the fact that EA SPORTS has been increasingly hush-hush about the development details of FIFA 2000, and you have a veritable cornucopia of expectations around the gaming table. And, given the clear financial and critical success of FIFA 99, the company must have felt increasingly hard-pressed to produce a defining signature moment with which to close out the millennium. With this as a backdrop, then, permit me to briefly spill the beans, if you will, about the newsworthy permutations to this celebrated title.
Subtle Differences
Having reached near graphical perfection with FIFA 99, it’s not surprising that EA SPORTS has apparently opted for mostly subtle changes, and with an emphasis on gameplay and playability. Careful to avoid the stigma of releasing simply an updated version of their gem, however, the Canadian footy boys have struggled to make the FIFA 2000 experience at least feel discernibly different.
This is readily apparent as you step into the game, because instead of some fat boy, Gay Dad’s in there to greet you, instead. Private preferences aside, however, the musical element should have ample appeal within the hip-and-happening crowd, as selections from Robbie Williams, Apollo Four Forty, Lunatic Calm, Junior Blanks, Elite Force, Sniper and Reel Big Fish are also included in the game. While on the subject of audible content, it is well worth noting that FIFA 2000 has true global character, by featuring commentary in different languages. The Major League Soccer edition touts the linguistic acumen of U.S. national team member Julie Foudy and ESPN’s Phil Schoen, which itself is an interesting twist. I only say ”twist?because a game with the breadth of FIFA 2000 must be dissected and analyzed over a longer period of time than this preview will allow. A comprehensive review, therefore, will be published soon after the official release date. The remainder of this initial glimpse, as a result, will briefly summarize the goods on FIFA 2000.
